Pint-Sized Performers, New Droptops Hit Sports Car Segment

The Saturn Sky is a new small sports car that debuts in 2007.
Smaller sports cars are big news for 2007. Along with the redesign of Volkswagen's GTI hatchback, Saturn and Pontiac are launching high-output versions of the Sky and Solstice roadsters. Dubbed Sky Red Line and Solstice GXP, each features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 260 horsepower.
Joining the ranks a bit later on, Audi's second-generation TT sports car retains its athletic stance and now wears the brand's distinctive front grille. It's scheduled to hit dealerships in about a year as a 2008 model.
Sports cars are ideal convertible candidates, and several new models are available. Bentley says its new Continental GTC convertible can hit 190 mph with the top down, and Jaguar's stylish XK droptop has been redesigned for 2007.
If you're in the market for something less expensive, Volkswagen has a new Eos retractable hardtop convertible that the automaker says can transform from a closed coupe to a mobile tanning machine in about 25 seconds. Mitsubishi is launching a redesigned Eclipse Spyder convertible, and muscle-car fans can get the Ford Shelby GT500 in either coupe or convertible form. Both versions have a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8.
