Chevrolet S-10 (2003)

Chevrolet's compact pickup truck sees only a handful of changes for the 2003 model year, including a new fuel-injection system for its 4.3-liter V-6 engine. The seats and door panels get new cloth trim. During the 2002 model year, a Flame/Heat decal was added to the Xtreme models and a ZR5 Sport Appearance Package became available for the Crew Cab trucks.

Chevrolet SSR (2003)

Billed as “the American Street Machine,” Chevrolet's eagerly awaited SSR (Super Sports Roadster) is part open-air roadster and part compact hot-rod pickup truck. Equipped with a retractable “top stack” hardtop, the limited-production rear-wheel-drive pickup will have a starting price of about $42,000. It will be equipped with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine and an automatic transmission.

Dodge Dakota (2003)

Only V-6- and V-8-powered versions of Dodge's midsize Dakota pickup truck are available for the 2003 model year because the four-cylinder engine has been dropped. A new Stampede Appearance Package will be added during 2003; offered on regular cab and Club Cab Sport models, this option group includes ground-effects side moldings, wheel flares, 16-by-8-inch aluminum wheels and a rear stabilizer bar.

Ford Ranger (2003)

Buyers of Ford's compact pickup like to drive distinctive trucks. With that in mind, Ford has some new option groups for its 2003 Ranger. A Tremor 4x2 SuperCab audio package with a485-watt Pioneer sound system is still offered. Ford calls its new FX4/Level II option, featuring Bilstein shocks and Alcoa forged-aluminum wheels, the “True Off-Road Enthusiast Package.”

GMC Sonoma (2003)

For the 2004 model year, GMC will have a new midsize pickup truck called the Canyon. Meanwhile, the 2003 Sonoma compact pickup, which is a close relative to Chevrolet's S-10, goes into its final season.

Mazda simplified the lineup of its compact pickups in 2002 and began referring to them simply as the “Truck,” rather than calling them B-Series, as before. A four-cylinder engine powers the B2300 series, while the B3000 and B4000 versions are equipped with V-6 engines. All three are closely related to equivalent Ford Rangers.

Nissan's compact pickup truck gained a new Crew Cab Long Bed body style for the 2002 model year; it sports a 74.6-inch cargo box and an extended wheelbase. For 2003, Nissan offers the industry's first power retractable roof in a compact truck. Called Open Sky, it's optional on all Crew Cab models.
